Biscuit
has been a show mule since she was 4 years old. She is now 26
and we are celebrating her 22th.show season anniversary. Her birth
year was 1986 and she was foaled and raised on the family farm.
She does a variety of disciplines including Western, English,
Jumping, Driving, and Trail. In 2004, Biscuit showed her incredible
versatility by winning the Oregon Horseman’s Association individual
Battle of the Breeds Championship. She was the only animal in the
field of 14 breeds to gain points in all 5 events and she was first
in 3 of the events: Reining, Trail, and Jumping.
Biscuit has also helped a lot of youth and novice riders along the
way. She has been an Oregon High School Equestrian winner,
4-H medallion winner, and novice adult champion at open and mule
shows. She has a multi-state fan club and the name Biscuit is well
loved within that club. She has helped riders that had given up
riding to renew love of the sport and return with confidence.
Driving is one of Biscuit’s greatest loves. She has driven to a Year
End Championship with the American Mule Association, a reserve
national championship with North American Saddle Mule Association,
and a reserve world championship with Bishop Mule Days.
Biscuit returned to the show arena for 2010 after a severe injury to
a suspensory ligament. She thanks the great services of Drs.
Revanaugh and Emerson for treatment measures and then took an entire
year off. We are proud to announce she is completely free of any
unsoundness and back to full competition.
Biscuit has entered many parades over the years as a single and with
groups. Her first parade was in Haines, OR at the July 4 Celebration
when she was 4. She has been in the Hells Canyon Mule Days Parade,
Bishop Mule Days Celebration Parade, Lebanon Strawberry Festival
Parade, Fossil Mule Show Parade, Montana Mule Days Parade,
Brownsville Pioneer Picnic Parade, and other small community
parades.
Biscuit has participated as a breed demonstration equine at the
Northwest Equine Expo in Albany, OR almost every year since they
started in 1998. She has been ridden and driven in these events
often with small children since she is so dependable in a crowded
situation.
For the last 6 years, excepting for her off-year with the injury,
Biscuit has been a faithful 4-H mount. Many years, she has been used
by multiple youth at the 4-H fair. She is a usual mount for first
year riders that don’t have an equine available that is good for a
novice. She has also participated in the advanced classes with
Shelby Bishop, granddaughter, as Shelby has grown through the
years.
Biscuit continues to maintain a show and exhibition schedule but she
can’t participate in NASMA shows anymore because travel to
the mid and eastern parts of the country would be too much for her.
She doesn’t show in open competition as much as she once did but
still drives in open shows and in youth shows. Biscuit’s latest open
driving competition was at the Oregon State Fair in 2012. She
was 1st in 3 of 4 driving classes and was the only mule in the
classes. The 4th class she was 2nd.
Probably one of the greatest testimonies to Biscuit and her fans in
the equine world happened just recently. After participating in the
All Breed Challenge at the Equine Expo, I was having coffee
in our local shop and mentioned the name Biscuit to my friend I was
having coffee with. A lady passing by our table stopped and said
“were you talking about Biscuit? I saw her last weekend and we loved
her. We were rooting for her all the time.”
